About My Work

My work questions the relationship between rationality and instinct and how they are perceived both personally and by the viewer. Typically we suppress the instinctive part of our personalities and tend to trust more in rationality. I am encouraging people to engage with my work in a purely impulsive and natural way. I use bright colours, curved forms and interesting textures to urge the viewer to want to touch and play with the forms.

The sculptures that I create resemble ‘monsters’. As children we try to hide from the monsters that we imagine just as we hide from our natural, impulsive side of our personalities as adults. Therefore the monsters are created to encourage people to want to challenge their knowledge of rationality and imaginative and immerse themselves into these sculptures. The idea of play and joy is the feeling that I create with my art, which is why I have not made scary monsters but instead ones that are inviting and surreal which tempt you into a idiosyncratic world.

I create the sculptures from first working from drawings. The drawings start as simple mark making which I develop and evolve in an impulsive way into a creature like image. From the drawings I make small maquettes and then selected a few successful ones to develop into lager sculptures. I allow the images to occur in an unstructured way with no planning or previous thought to get the most raw version of my imagination.  I allow natural distortion from my hand to help the transition between the drawings to sculpture. The drawings look child like with their bright colours and chaotic forms. The link between childhood and adulthood has become a big part of my work and made me to look back and use ‘childish’ materials in a more refined way to make the sculptures. Plastercine and paper mache are the two techniques that linked best to my own personal memories of doing art at primary school and at home.
